Powerful, Intimate, Infuriating.

Taddeo has spent 8 years living close by and documenting every aspect of the three women’s relationships featured in this book. Maggie was groomed by her high school teacher and it follows her court hearing against him. Sloane is in an open marriage, sleeping with multiple partners alongside her husband. Lina is in a loveless marriage, desperate for the attention from her husband, finding herself drawn into an affair with her first crush.

Don’t get me wrong this is a book I feel that should be read by both men and women and is fully relevant to struggles most women have with desire and judgement from other women. The hours Taddeo put in with the women to find out their stories is just incredible.

The attention to detail was second to none and you wouldn’t have guessed that it was non fiction by the way it flows like a fiction book. I can appreciate how well written it is.

However, I found it a very hard read to start with, finding myself unable to truly relate to any of the women featured. I feel that it focuses on quite extreme versions of desire and relationships, with some horrendous circumstances in their pasts leading to their present day selves. I would be interested to hear from a wider cross section of women to hear a more balanced account . None of the women had a good relationship with family, that support network of people to confide in. I can definately relate with many of the themes of the book, but for the most part I can only empathise. I guess it is different for each person that reads this.

A good read to spark a conversation.
