|| Tidelands || Philippa Gregory || • Book Review • 7.5/10 •
Tidelands is a brooding tale of a desperately poor, abandoned wife who finds herself trying her hardest to pull herself and her children out of poverty.
Alinor comes across a dangerous stranger who she helps, falls for and ultimately ends up as her ruin. Set to a backdrop of unrest during the English Civil War and at a time of great suspicion and prejudice.
I found this book a slow burner, one that I had to stop and start to keep focused on all the historical detail. I found Alinor’s character endearing, I wanted her to succeed and better herself and her children, but I wasn’t keen on James if I’m honest.
I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series, more so to see where Gregory takes the characters onwards. One to read in a quiet room when you want an escape from the present time.
