|| A Theatre for Dreamers || Polly Samson || • Book review • 6.5/10 •
I’ll be honest, I really wanted to love this book but, as mesmerising as the descriptions of the beautiful island of Hydra were, the plot and characters seemed to fall flat.
It is a story of a young girl called Erica, escaping the coat tails of her insufferable Father, to Hydra, with a group of friends after the death of her mother.
It weaves in the gossip, heartbreaks and passing fancies of life on an heady island full of dreamers, artists and expats.
Samson’s sheer brilliance for making the reader feel like they have travelled to 1960’s Greece and can see, smell and taste what the characters are experiencing, unfortunately doesn’t make up for the lack of connection to the many, many characters that appear and disappear as fast as the tide.
Personally, I found it a hard read and found myself skipping lines to reach the end, wishing for more of a storyline, as it didn’t feel like it was heading into any sort of conclusion.
