|| The Light Between Oceans || M L Stedman || • Book Review 4/5⭐️
He struggles to make sense of it--all this love, so bent out of shape, refracted, like light through the lens. - M L Stedman.
1926, Australia. Tom takes a job as the Lighthouse keeper on an isolated island after returning from War. His wife Izzy is struggling to bear a child, having lost three babies. A boat washes up to the lighthouse with a dead man and a baby. Izzy desperately wants to keep the baby and tell no one, no matter the consequences.
This made me ugly cry. Emotionally, it rips away the safety blanket of the morals most hold true, revealing the desperation and maternal instincts that Izzy faces. With the isolation from the rest of the world, it’s hard to say whether we would all make the right decision, in those circumstances.
It was at times slow to begin, but once it got going it was hard to put down. Historical fiction is my favourite genre so this hit the spot, but one to read when you are feeling strong emotionally.
