//FIVE STARS//

A huge thank you to Tandem Collective, Hot Key YA Books and Jordan Ifueko, for the gifted Audiobook to join in the Listenalong. I also bought the book on release day to readalong, because I was enjoying it so much.
“That people are like rocks stacked in a totem: men over women, women over children. We accept our roles, or the whole tower falls apart. A Songbird was not meant to soar as an eagle” I frowned, remembering The Lady’s word on the day I had last seen her. ‘You caged me like a bird, but you could not make me sing’
Tarisai has been raised secluded from others by her mother ‘The Lady’, who sends her to the capital Aritsar to compete with other children. The competition is to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of Eleven, bound by the Ray, to be part of a family. The Lady demands, she must kill the Crown Prince when he has chosen her, but Tarisai fights against her destiny.

The intricate West African inspired folklore set the scene for an epic YA fantasy series. I couldn’t find fault with any of the characters, they were all so well developed. Once you get to grips with the vast array of characters and realms Ifueko has imagined, it is truly magnificent writing. Tarisai is such a strong protagonist, her strength will have a lasting impact on young readers.

The only problem I have now, is how long my book hangover will last, whilst waiting for the next book to be released 🤞🏻
