Uplifting, beautiful, heartbreaking.
Allie is a scientist, intelligent and kind but after making a life altering discovery, sets out to find the truth about her family and why her Grandmother was so angry about her mother’s secret. Ed is her lifelong best friend, married but hiding some painful secrets. They escape to Italy to help Allie find the answers she is looking for and to help Ed to open up about why he is struggling.
It was a rollercoaster of a story, I devoured it in a day as I just couldn’t stop reading. The flashbacks to Allie’s grandmothers past and her mother, helped the story to flow and filled in the gaps. I LOVED the characters, they came across to the reader very well and were easy to relate to. It tackles so many different issues during the book, (SPOILERS) the taboo subject of male victims of domestic violence, adoption and teenage pregnancy. It is all written with such emotion and sensitivity.
Oh and Italy...honestly I could picture myself swept up there, soaking in the sights and smells and tastes of Lake Garda. It was a stunning setting for an equally incredible book.
Perfect Escapism.
