|| At First Light || Vanessa Lafaye || Book Review 5⭐️ ||
Injustice, love, prejudice.
1993, 96 year old Alicia Cortez, shoots a Ku Klux Klan official dead in the middle of a rally in Key West and admits to the murder immediately.
1919, mixed race Alicia, is just arriving in Key West from her home in Cuba, to escape her husband. Trying to create a new life for herself, she soon realises she can’t escape the segregation and prejudices, that she thought she left behind.
Wow. This story is so emotionally powerful. Lafaye has based it on true events and researched it meticulously to bring it to life. It reflects on love, racial segregation, the ku klux klan, WW1 and revenge all in 333 pages. I loved Summertime, but this book has exceeded my high expectations from Lafaye.
One of my favourites of 2020 🌴
